What Wegovy costs in Ireland
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription-only medicine, and it is not covered by the HSE, the Drug Payment Scheme or private health insurance for weight loss. Paid privately in Ireland, the medication alone typically runs from around €180 per month at the 0.25 mg starter dose to roughly €300–€350 per month at the 2.4 mg maintenance dose — and most providers add a consultation or service fee on top of that.
With Slimbr, the Wegovy medication itself is priced by dose:
| Wegovy dose | Medication price per month |
|---|---|
| 0.25 mg (starter) | €150 |
| 0.5 mg | €150 |
| 1 mg | €150 |
| 1.7 mg | €255 |
| 2.4 mg (maintenance) | €350 |
Medication only — Slimbr's service fee (€49 in month 1, €99/month from month 2) and delivery are added on top. Prices as of August 2026; the exact price for the dose your doctor recommends is confirmed at your free assessment, before you pay anything.
Slimbr's doctor-led programme keeps the total predictable:
| What you pay | What's included | |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility quiz | Free | 2-minute online check |
| Doctor assessment | Free | Phone consultation with an Irish-registered doctor — including which medication fits you best |
| Month 1 | From €229 all-in | €49 service fee + starter-dose medication — exact price depends on which medication the doctor prescribes. Delivery added at checkout. |
| Month 2 onwards | €99/month + medication | Ongoing doctor oversight, dose reviews, dietitian support; medication price varies by medication and dose |
The exact medication price for the option and dose your doctor recommends — semaglutide (Wegovy) or an alternative such as tirzepatide (Mounjaro) — is confirmed at your free assessment, before you pay anything. Some Irish health-insurance plans cover part of consultation costs, and 20% tax relief may apply to qualifying medical expenses through Revenue (Med 1) — an itemised receipt is provided. Is Wegovy available in Ireland?
Yes. Wegovy launched in Ireland in March 2025 and is available on private prescription through licensed pharmacies. It is the form of semaglutide licensed specifically for weight management — a point worth being precise about, because Ozempic (also semaglutide) is licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss.
Because Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, a medical assessment always comes first — you cannot legally buy it without one, and you should be wary of any website offering it prescription-free. With Slimbr the assessment is free and happens by phone with an Irish-registered doctor: dosing starts low and increases step by step under medical supervision, and ongoing check-ins mean side effects or dose questions are handled by a doctor who knows your history.
Wegovy doses — including the new 7.2 mg
Wegovy is a once-weekly injection, started low and stepped up gradually to reduce side effects: 0.25 mg → 0.5 mg → 1 mg → 1.7 mg → 2.4 mg, with each step usually lasting four weeks. 2.4 mg has been the standard maintenance dose since launch.
Two recent changes are worth knowing about:
- Wegovy 7.2 mg — a higher weekly dose approved in the EU in February 2026 as a step-up option for people who need further weight reduction after 2.4 mg. A single-dose 7.2 mg pen was approved in July 2026, with the manufacturer indicating a launch in the second half of 2026. Whether stepping up is appropriate is a clinical decision for your doctor.
- The Wegovy pill — an oral semaglutide tablet approved by the European Commission on 15 July 2026, the first oral GLP-1 licensed for weight management in the EU. As of August 2026 it is not yet on sale in Ireland — our Wegovy pill explainer tracks its availability.
Who is eligible?
Wegovy is generally prescribed to adults (18+) where:
- BMI is 30 or above, or
- BMI is 27 or above alongside a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea.
The doctor reviews your full health history and checks for contraindications before any prescription. If Wegovy isn't right for you, the assessment costs nothing and the doctor can discuss alternatives.
Wegovy or Mounjaro — which one?
The two medicines are often compared, but they're not interchangeable:
| Wegovy | Mounjaro | |
|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient | Semaglutide (GLP-1 receptor agonist) | Tirzepatide (dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist) |
| Schedule | Once-weekly injection, 0.25 mg → 2.4 mg (7.2 mg EU-approved 2026) | Once-weekly injection, 2.5 mg → 15 mg |
| In Ireland since | March 2025 | Available on private prescription |
| Licence | Weight management | Weight management and type 2 diabetes |
Which is more suitable depends on your health history, tolerability, goals and budget — exactly what the free doctor assessment is for. If you want the deeper comparison first, read Ozempic vs Mounjaro vs Saxenda or the Mounjaro Ireland page.
Will the HSE cover Wegovy?
Not currently. Wegovy's manufacturer applied for HSE reimbursement in March 2025, but as of August 2026 no reimbursement decision has been made — Wegovy remains private-pay for weight management, and it is not on the Drug Payment Scheme for weight loss. Our HSE and medical-card explainer tracks where State coverage of weight-loss medication stands.
What you can do today: some Irish health-insurance plans cover part of consultation costs, and 20% tax relief may apply to qualifying medical expenses through Revenue (Med 1). Slimbr provides an itemised receipt suitable for both.
Why people choose Slimbr
Doctor-led, Irish, and built for the long run. Slimbr is an Irish weight-loss service run by a team of Irish-registered doctors and a CORU-registered dietitian. The medication is one tool; the programme around it — dose reviews with the doctor, dietitian support, regular check-ins — is what makes the results stick.
- Free assessment before any commitment — you only pay if the doctor confirms treatment is appropriate and you choose to go ahead.
- The right medication, not a default — the doctor recommends Wegovy, an alternative, or no medication at all, based on your health rather than what's in stock.
- Transparent pricing — service fee and medication itemised, receipt suitable for insurance and Med 1 tax-relief claims.
- Continuity — the same medical team throughout, with dose changes reviewed by a doctor rather than self-managed.

How much is Wegovy in Ireland per month?
Privately, the medication alone typically costs from around €180/month at the starter dose to roughly €300–€350/month at the 2.4 mg maintenance dose, plus whatever consultation fee a provider charges. Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?
Same active ingredient (semaglutide), different products: Wegovy is licensed for weight management, Ozempic for type 2 diabetes. For weight loss in Ireland, Wegovy is the licensed route to semaglutide.

The oral semaglutide tablet was EU-approved on 15 July 2026 but is not yet on sale in Ireland as of August 2026. The Wegovy pill explainer tracks the timeline.
How quickly can I start?
The quiz takes about two minutes and doctor assessment calls are often available within days. If the doctor approves, your prescription goes straight to the pharmacy electronically.

No. The whole Slimbr process — eligibility quiz, doctor assessment call, prescription and pharmacy delivery — happens online and by phone, anywhere in Ireland.
What if the doctor says Wegovy isn't right for me?
Then you pay nothing for medication — the quiz and the assessment call are free, and the doctor can discuss alternatives, including tirzepatide (Mounjaro) or no medication at all.
