How Many Calories Are in an Irish Takeaway? Spice Bag, Breakfast Roll, Chipper and Pub Food

Search "how many calories in a spice bag" and you'll find a dozen answers that disagree by hundreds of calories. That's not because anyone's lying. A breakfast roll from a garage deli isn't a product with a label on it. It's whatever the person behind the counter builds, in whatever size roll, with however much butter and oil. The calories change from shop to shop and from one day to the next.

So here's the honest version: realistic estimates for the Irish takeaway and pub favourites, pitched on the generous side, because portions are often generous.

Quick answer (18 October 2026): Many full Irish takeaway meals land between about 900 and 1,500 calories, which is roughly half to three-quarters of a day's calories for many adults. A full breakfast roll is around 900–1,200, a chicken fillet roll 900–1,250, a full spice bag 1,200–1,700 and a large fish and chips 1,000–1,400. These are our estimates, not lab measurements: independent shops don't publish nutrition information, so treat every number as a range.

Why can't you just look the number up?

Large chains such as McDonald's and Subway publish nutrition information for their menus, and that's the place to check if that's where you're eating. A local chipper, Chinese takeaway or deli counter has no label, no standard recipe and no standard portion. Calorie databases list entries for these foods, but they're usually somebody's best guess for one particular serving.

The ranges below are our estimates from typical recipes and portion sizes. We've aimed them a little high, because oil, butter and sauces add up quickly and people commonly underestimate them. If a number is out by 15 per cent in either direction, the conclusion doesn't change.

How many calories are in a breakfast roll or a chicken fillet roll?

The Irish breakfast roll is one of the most underestimated foods going. A white roll or baguette on its own is 250–400 calories before anything goes into it. Add butter, sausage, bacon, pudding, a hash brown and a fried egg and you're well past a thousand.

Rolls and breakfast: estimated calories
FoodEstimated caloriesWhat pushes it up
Full Irish breakfast roll (sausage, bacon, egg, pudding, hash brown, butter)900–1,200Buttered roll, fried in oil, extra rasher
Chicken fillet roll (crispy chicken, mayo, cheese, coleslaw)900–1,250Mayo, cheese, buttered bread, large roll
Sausage and egg roll600–800Butter, fried egg, sauce
Sausage roll (deli counter)350–500Large size, pastry
Large breakfast baguette, garage deli1,000–1,300Everything on it: extra rasher, butter, sauce

The chicken fillet roll isn't far behind. The chicken is breaded and fried, and the roll usually comes with mayo, cheese and coleslaw. The filling is rarely the problem. The sauces and the butter are.

How many calories are in chipper food?

Chips soak up oil, so a large portion carries far more than the potatoes alone would suggest. Then come the extras: curry sauce, garlic mayo, cheese. Each of those adds a couple of hundred calories, often without being noticed.

The chipper: estimated calories
FoodEstimated caloriesWhat pushes it up
Single of chips (regular portion)500–800Fried in oil; the portion is the main driver
Large chips900–1,300Portion size is the whole story
Battered sausage350–500Batter soaks up oil
Battered cod and large chips1,000–1,400Batter, oil, tartare sauce
Burger and chips1,000–1,400Cheese, sauce, large chips
Curry chips900–1,300The sauce adds oil and sugar
Garlic cheese chips1,000–1,500Melted cheese, garlic mayo
Spice bag (full bag)1,200–1,700Fried chicken, chips and onions, all in oil, plus the seasoning mix

How many calories are in a spice bag?

A spice bag is shredded fried chicken, chips, peppers and onions, tossed in a spice mix, usually in a bag big enough for two. If it's one person's dinner, a full bag is somewhere around 1,200–1,700 calories. Shared between two, it's a more modest 600–850 each. Nothing in it is unusual; it's simply a lot of fried food in one bag.

Chinese, pizza and kebab: how many calories?

The takeaway classics follow the same pattern. The meal is rarely one item. It's a main, rice or chips, a starter, a side and a sauce, and those extras are where a 700-calorie meal quietly becomes 1,500.

Chinese, pizza and kebab: estimated calories
FoodEstimated caloriesWhat pushes it up
Chicken curry with boiled rice900–1,300Oil in the sauce, big rice portion
Sweet and sour chicken balls with rice1,000–1,500Batter, sugary sauce

How many calories are in pub food?

Pub kitchens are generous with butter, cream and gravy, and the portions are built for a hungry crowd. Drinks are the other half of the picture. We've covered those separately in our guide to Guinness calories and the lowest-calorie alcohol in Ireland.

Pub food: estimated calories
FoodEstimated caloriesWhat pushes it up
Pint of Guinnessabout 210–230Size of the pint

How many calories do you need in a day?

Commonly quoted guideline figures for adults are about 2,000 calories a day for women and 2,500 for men, though the real figure depends on age, size, activity and health. A 1,200-calorie takeaway is more than half of a 2,000-calorie day in one sitting. That's not a reason to feel guilty, since food is not a moral issue. It's the reason a week of "just a few takeaways" can feel confusing when the scales don't move.

Can you still eat takeaway and manage your weight?

You can, and the changes that help are usually small and practical rather than dramatic:

  • Share the sides. A single of chips between two is a very different meal from one each.
  • Skip the second sauce. Curry sauce, garlic mayo and cheese each add a couple of hundred calories.
  • Ask for the bread plain or lightly buttered. It's an easy edit on a roll.
  • Pick one extra. Chips or a battered sausage or a starter, not all three.
  • Check the chain's own nutrition page before you order if it's a chain.

If you've tried practical changes like these and still find your weight hard to manage, a doctor can talk through whether medical support is suitable for you. See who qualifies for medical weight-loss treatment in Ireland, or start with a free eligibility check. A doctor decides what, if anything, is suitable.

For transparency: Slimbr is a doctor-led programme. Treatment starts from €229 in month one — a €49 clinical fee to Slimbr plus medication (typically about €180) paid to the independent partner pharmacy that dispenses it — and the eligibility quiz is free.

FAQ: calories in Irish takeaway food

How many calories are in a spice bag?

A full bag for one person is roughly 1,200–1,700 calories on our estimate. Shared between two, about half that each. Shops differ, so treat it as a range.

How many calories are in a breakfast roll?

A full Irish breakfast roll with sausage, bacon, egg, pudding, hash brown and butter is around 900–1,200 calories on our estimate. A simple sausage and egg roll is nearer 600–800.

How many calories are in a chicken fillet roll?

Around 900–1,250 calories on our estimate, depending on the size of the roll and how much mayo, cheese and butter goes on it.

How many calories are in a chipper meal?

Battered cod and large chips is roughly 1,000–1,400 calories, a burger and chips similar. Add curry sauce or cheese and it climbs.

Are these numbers exact?

No. They are our estimates for typical Irish independent shops, set a little high because portions and cooking oil are generous. Chains publish their own nutrition information, which is more reliable for those menus.

How do I find out if I'm eligible for weight-loss medication?

Eligibility is a doctor's decision based on your BMI, history and other conditions; a free quiz is the place to start.
