Ozempic in Ireland (2026): Price, Who Can Get It and How to Buy Safely

"Ozempic Ireland" is one of the most-searched medicine queries in the country, and the answers online are a mess. Some pages treat it as a weight-loss product you can simply order. Others bury the one fact that decides everything: in Ireland, Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss.

That distinction changes who can get it on the HSE, what a private prescription involves, and what you should expect to be asked. Here's the straight version: what Ozempic is, what it costs in Ireland in October 2026, who can get it, how to buy it safely, and how it compares to the medicines that are licensed for weight management.

Quick answer (18 October 2026): Ozempic (semaglutide) is a prescription-only weekly injection licensed in Ireland for adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes. The HSE reimburses it for that use only. Privately, Chemist Warehouse Ireland's list has Ozempic at €119.99 for the 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg pens and €224.99 for the 2 mg pen (checked 16 October 2026) — plus whatever your prescriber charges. Using it for weight loss is "off-label", a decision for a doctor; Wegovy carries the weight-management licence.

What is Ozempic, and is it available in Ireland?

Ozempic is the brand name for semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk. It belongs to a class called GLP-1 receptor agonists and is given as a once-weekly injection from a pre-filled pen. It's available in Ireland on prescription through pharmacies — you can't buy it over the counter, and you shouldn't buy it from anyone who offers to skip the prescription.

The EU licence, which Ireland follows, covers adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise. That's what it was developed and tested for, and it's why you may have seen supply pressure on Ozempic when demand from people without diabetes spiked: people with diabetes depend on it. For background on how the whole class fits together, see our plain-English guide to which GLP-1 medicines are licensed in Ireland and for what.

How much does Ozempic cost in Ireland?

Ozempic is priced per pen, and how long a pen lasts depends on the dose your doctor sets. The clearest published figures come from Chemist Warehouse Ireland, which publishes its prescription prices online. Here's its list as checked on 16 October 2026:

What does Ozempic cost at Chemist Warehouse Ireland? (October 2026)
PenPen strengthPublished price
Ozempic 0.25 mg / 0.5 mg / 1 mgLower strengths€119.99
Ozempic 2 mgHighest strength€224.99

Two caveats matter. First, those are medicine-only prices: every dose needs a prescriber, so a GP or clinic fee sits on top. Second, other pharmacies price differently and stock varies by branch, so it's worth ringing ahead. We track the full range by strength in our Ozempic cost in Ireland guide, and compare the two big chains line by line in our Chemist Warehouse vs Boots price check.

Can you get Ozempic for weight loss in Ireland?

Doctors in Ireland are allowed to prescribe a licensed medicine for a use outside its licence — that's called off-label prescribing — if they judge it clinically appropriate. That is a clinical judgement for the individual patient, not a standard route. It's worth being clear-eyed about what it means:

  • It's a medical decision, not a purchase. A doctor has to assess your history, weight and any conditions, and decide whether a particular medicine is suitable. Nobody should promise you a specific outcome.
  • There's a licensed alternative with the same ingredient. Wegovy is semaglutide licensed for weight management, and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed for weight management too. Our explainer on Ozempic vs Wegovy in Ireland walks through the difference.
  • Eligibility is about the person. Weight-management medicines are generally considered for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition — see who actually qualifies for weight-loss injections in Ireland. A doctor decides; a calculator can't — you can start a free eligibility check here.

Does the HSE cover Ozempic?

For type 2 diabetes, yes: Ozempic is reimbursed for that licensed use, mainly through the Long Term Illness scheme and the medical card. Medical-card holders aged under 70 pay €1.50 per item, capped at €15 a month. For weight loss, no. The HSE restricts Ozempic reimbursement to the diabetes indication, and it isn't available on the Drugs Payment Scheme for weight management.

The only GLP-1 injection with restricted State funding for weight is Saxenda (liraglutide), and the HSE's review of Mounjaro is ongoing — we track where it stands in our guide to Mounjaro, the medical card and the HSE decision.

Two practical supports apply to any doctor-prescribed treatment you pay for yourself: some Irish health insurers refund a share of the consultation fee, and Revenue's Med 1 process returns 20% of qualifying medical expenses. Keep every receipt. If you'd like a doctor's view first, the free two-minute eligibility check is the place to start.

How to get Ozempic in Ireland, step by step

There's no shortcut that's also safe. The legitimate route has the same shape wherever you go:

  1. Get assessed by a prescriber. That's your GP, a specialist, or a regulated online clinic with Irish-registered doctors. Expect questions about your weight, history, other medicines and goals.
  2. If it's appropriate, you receive a prescription — for Ozempic or for a medicine licensed for your situation.
  3. A registered Irish pharmacy dispenses it. Your prescriber may send it electronically, or you take it to your own pharmacy.
  4. Follow-up matters. These are powerful medicines with dose steps and side effects to watch for, so ongoing review is part of what you're paying for.

Buying Ozempic online in Ireland: how to do it safely

"Buy Ozempic online" is a risky search. Counterfeit and unregulated pens have been a documented problem across Europe, and a pharmacy that will sell you a prescription medicine without a prescription is breaking the rules — so it's not one to trust with your health. A few simple checks:

  • It must ask for a prescription. No prescription, no purchase — that's a hard red flag, not a convenience.
  • Check the pharmacy is registered. Legitimate Irish pharmacies, including online ones, are registered with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland as retail pharmacy businesses — you can check the PSI register, and online sellers of non-prescription medicines must display the EU common logo.
  • Be wary of "too cheap". A price far below every published list is more likely a warning sign than a bargain.
  • Avoid "peptide" or "research chemical" sellers. Those are not licensed medicines and they aren't dispensed with medical oversight.
