"Is Wegovy going to be covered by the HSE?" is a question many people are asking this month, and for good reason: the national assessment of Wegovy for weight management has just finished. That is real news — but it is not the same as a funding decision, and the gap between the two matters if you are deciding what to do. Here is the calm version of where things stand.
Quick answer (October 2026)
The National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics (NCPE) completed its assessment of Wegovy (semaglutide) for weight management in adults on 13 October 2026, and recommended that it be "considered for reimbursement". The NCPE also states that the budget impact estimates are substantial and that affordability must be weighed in the decision. The HSE has not announced that Wegovy will be funded, and as far as we are aware it is not currently reimbursed for weight loss. The next steps sit with the HSE.

What did the NCPE actually find?
Wegovy's route through the Irish system is public on the NCPE's website (HTA ID 25024). The assessment covers adults with obesity (BMI of 30 or above), or overweight (BMI 27 to under 30) with at least one weight-related health condition, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity (NCPE, Wegovy HTA ID 25024).
| Step | Date |
|---|---|
| Rapid review commissioned | 21 March 2025 |
| Rapid review completed (full assessment recommended) | 14 May 2025 |
| Full HTA commissioned by the HSE | 29 May 2025 |
| Full submission received from the company | 23 February 2026 |
| Preliminary review sent to the company | 27 May 2026 |
| Assessment completed | 13 October 2026 |

Does "recommended for consideration" mean Wegovy will be free?
No. The NCPE assesses clinical and cost effectiveness and budget impact. It does not decide what the HSE funds. The HSE Drugs Group considers the evidence and makes a recommendation, and the HSE senior management makes the funding decision. Discussions on price and on the wider health budget with the Department of Health can be part of that process, and it can take several meetings. We are not aware of a date for a decision.

What does the HSE cover for weight loss today?
Currently, Saxenda (liraglutide, a daily injection) is reported as the only GLP-1 medicine the HSE reimburses for weight management. It is available free with a medical card or subsidised under the Drugs Payment Scheme, and patients must apply individually under restrictions (Irish Times, 12 October 2026). Ozempic is funded for type 2 diabetes only. We explain the differences in our Saxenda guide and Ozempic vs Wegovy in Ireland.
Mounjaro is in a similar process of its own: the same report says the HSE's expert drugs group was due to discuss it, with no decision yet. See Will Mounjaro be free on the HSE? for that picture.

Should you wait for HSE funding?
That is a personal and clinical question rather than a news question. A few honest points:
- A funding decision is possible but unconfirmed, with no date attached.
- If it were funded, the HSE would set who is eligible, and access may be narrower than the NCPE-assessed population.
- Whether to wait or start is a decision to make with your doctor, based on your own circumstances.
A doctor can talk through whether treatment is appropriate for you and how to plan around cost. Find out how a supervised programme works.

FAQs: Wegovy and the HSE
Is Wegovy covered by the HSE?
As far as we are aware, not currently for weight loss. The NCPE has completed its assessment and recommended Wegovy be considered for reimbursement, but the HSE has not announced a funding decision.
What does the NCPE recommendation mean?
It is an assessment of clinical and cost effectiveness and budget impact, passed to the HSE. It is not a decision to fund. The HSE Drugs Group makes a recommendation and the HSE senior management decides.
When will the HSE decide on Wegovy?
We are not aware of a date. Reimbursement processes can take several meetings, and may involve discussions on price and the wider health budget.
Which weight-loss injection does the HSE fund now?
Saxenda is reported as the only GLP-1 the HSE reimburses for weight management, with individual applications and restrictions. Ozempic is funded for type 2 diabetes only.
Who would qualify if Wegovy were funded?
That would be set by the HSE. The NCPE assessment covers adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with a weight-related condition, but funded access could be narrower.
Should I wait for Wegovy to be funded before starting treatment?
That is a decision to make with a doctor. Funding is possible but unconfirmed and undated.
